The Platinum headset isn’t Sony’s first 7.1 virtual surround-sound headset. That would be the Gold wireless headset, which launched a couple of years ago. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Gold headset is still definitely worth looking at. The chief difference between the Platinum and the Gold is driver size and 3D-audio compatibility. If you've got the cash for it, we think that the SteelSeries Arctis 9 and the Astro A50s are pretty unrivalled when it comes to the best wireless headsets available on PS4. While some others may undercut in terms of price, the sound quality of these are paramount. How we test the best PS4 headsets

PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset vs. PlayStation Gold PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset vs. PlayStation Gold

The Platinum Wireless Headset takes gaming audio to a whole new dimension, delivering rich highly-positional virtual surround sound in all PlayStation®4 games. You may be drawn to the PlayStation Platinum Wireless headset for its promise of Virtual Surround Sound and 3D Audio, but the former is pretty poor in action and the latter is available on only a handful of games. If you're all good with keeping tethered to your setup then the HyperX Cloud Alpha headset is hard value to argue against on your PS4 system. It's a tried and true formula that's frequently been upgraded over the years for a reason - it feels great on your head and sounds like a headset which should by all rights cost far more. Mr_B021 A pair of XM3s. They’ve got XM4 ones out now but I didn’t think it was really worth the upgrade. Brilliant quality sound and a comfortable design without having the gamer headset price hike as they’re made for audiophiles first and foremost. I have a pair of these and they do the job. They look nice and work well enough for in game chat on Co-op. I tend to not use them on games unless the other half is doing something. Battery life is OK but a couple of gaming sessions is enough to drain them enough that I have to recharge to make sure they don't cut out. That point changes slightly when you’re playing a game that uses 3D surround sound instead of simulated 7.1 –again, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the only one that offers it at the moment – and sound effects do have a better presence thanks to 3D Audio’s ability to create “100 virtual speakers”. I bought the headset for LOU2 and it was really good. Not as good as a decent surround system but great for night time gaming. Play with absolute precision and pinpoint the exact direction of movement, speech and gunfire with 3D Audio*. Put yourself at the centre of every game with 3D Audio technology, enhanced 7.1 surround sound and a host of premium gaming audio features.Do you own the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset? What are your thoughts on it, and do they align with our own? For transparency, PlayStation provided us with this product for review. Up Next: Does PSVR Work on PS5? Of course, that being said, there are headsets out there that offer more pronounced surround sound –one area that we felt the Platinum’s could’ve improved upon. Footsteps and gunfire imparted a general sense of directionality, but they didn’t have the same precision on Sony’s PlayStation Platinum as we’ve heard on other headsets.
