About this deal

In true Irvine Welsh fashion, everything about this collection is vile, dark, disturbing and vomit-inducing. It really is spit your dinner out material, but it grips you unbelievably hard. Finally there's the story that the film invests the most effort into, The Acid House. This was absolutely, the best midnight humor I've ever came across. Dirty, crazy, and makes Trainspotting, look like it copped out. A dope head switches bodies with a newly born baby, and while switch of bodies has become a comedy cliche, this one actually made it work. I laughed eccentrically and it really completed the film, if there's any reason to finish it, here you go. The Last Resort of Adriatic" - A surprisingly melancholic story about one last fling. But, as usual, this suicide feels very egoistic (almost like most of them). IW Race/ethnicity was another one. Those attitudes went through to other stuff, like ska, 2 Tone, and acid house. Same vibe then. It all came out of the same punk idea.

Irvine Welsh: I didn’t really choose, it was the producer Alex Usborne who decided which ones to do as he bought the rights to the book. I think when someone buys the rights to your book, you’re quite flattered, so you listen to their choices. He knew what he wanted to do, so I just let him get on with it. I kind of felt that the second story he chose was a bit too realist for the other two, but once they’d been filmed I thought that the second one came across really well, especially as we decided to cut it down to fit the other three. I thought it then worked much better instead of being a single drama, it then worked in the whole progressional thread of the film. Bleak, heart-rending and incredibly funny, Welsh's follow up to "Trainspotting" is a worthy successor to an incredibly tough act to follow. You read interviews with Siouxsie and you were scared of her: this cold, austere ice queen. Siouxsie, Poly Styrene, Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry, the Slits, these women were not pushovers. What was important was that they were songwriters, it was their band. Whereas before, chances were, a guy wrote the songs. Women weren’t given more power, they demanded more power. They didn’t dress to please men or sing sexually suggestive songs. They told their own stories. To me, that was one of the important breaks from the past of punk. IW He was in pubs in Primrose Hill a lot. He was always great, avuncular and fun. He seemed to lose interest in playing. Give Out But Don’t Give Up, that was the Throb album, wasn’t it? Total guitar, Stones-y kind of thing – he was in his element. Maybe the way the sound moved, he didn’t feel there was a place for him? If you look at any relationship, it’s the same isn’t it? People going in different directions, and not realising it. It’s an organic thing. My only gripe here is that the territory is a bit narrow. If there was just a bit of variety in perspectives, I would've given it five stars. I appreciate that Welsh is at home when writing about junkies and dropouts, but the occasional surprise would have done this collection some favours. The Granton Star Cause" - A very comedic take on "The Fly." I think I liked this one the most. What if you're so messed up and pathetic that even God himself is fed up with you? BG I’m glad we’ve got two beautiful sons [Wolf, 19, and Lux, 17]. It’s about giving them a loving environment to grow up in, letting them be themselves. So long as they’re all right, I’m all right.

The Acid House by Irvine Welsh | Waterstones

Welsh sabe a lo que nos gusta, inmundicia europea, y aunque la traducción es realmente pésima (cosa que debería justificar a las tres estrellas), mantiene la narrativa acostumbrada. So ye hud they powers, ye jist couldnae be bothered usin thum. That's why ah'm interested in ye Boab. You're jist like me. A lazy, apathetic, slovenly cunt. Now ah hate bein like this, n bein immortal, ah canny punish masel. Ah kin punish you though, mate. That's whit ah intend tae dae.” PLOT: A grotesque, genre-bending trio of tawdry, disturbing stories about squalor, decay, excess, perversion, stupidity, and altered states. Welsh: I think it was probably very helpful. To be honest, when I did this, because the stories were already there and they are so much inside the main character’s head, it was very easy to just start off with the dialogue and inject parts from there. It was the easiest thing to do and I loved it. BG As you become older you start to understand more, but you still feel sad about it. You’re burying stuff and it comes out in other ways. You can turn it into good art. I haven’t done therapy for a while but, when I did, I’d describe certain reactions and they’d say, you’re disassociating. I thought, maybe that’s right, just that feeling, the powerlessness. I could argue with you about football, or with the band about something creative. When it came to women, girlfriends, being angry and emotional, it was almost like I was a football and I’d been punctured.

The third segment, "The Acid House", uses surrealism to tell a story about marriage, babies, and the excesses of chemical dependency. One night, raver Coco Brice takes a particularly strong acid. His psychedelic experience occurs at the same time as a bolt of lightning, resulting in Coco exchanging bodies with the newborn baby of middle-class couple Rory and Jenny. In "A Soft Touch", Johnny marries Catriona, a slovenly part-time prostitute, in a shotgun wedding. Their baby Chantal is born around the same time that the arrogant Larry moves in to the flat above them. Johnny is mostly left to care for Chantal, and Catriona starts sleeping with Larry. Johnny increasingly finds himself being taken advantage of and mistreated by both Larry and Catriona, but can't do anything about it due to his kindhearted nature. The first chapter of the story, "The Granton Star Cause", premiered before completion of the other two parts. [4] It was also shown on Channel 4 on August 3, 1997. [5] The short film offended elements of the UK tabloid press with a depiction of a cynical, jaded, foul-mouthed God. [5] Filming of "A Soft Touch" and "The Acid House" concluded in late 1997. [4] The completed film premiered at the Marché du Film (Cannes Film Market) in May of 1998, [1] and was released in the UK on January 1, 1999. [6]BG In August, we did the NHS frontline workers’ benefit gig at the O2, with Liam Gallagher headlining. It was strange. I hadn’t done anything since 2019… It was like being a football player who hadn’t been in training and suddenly you’re playing a game. It took me a few songs to get my sea legs, to start to enjoy it. Si bien me queda claro que lo de Welsh no son los cuentos, si no las historias más largas y trabajadas, incluso esto se nota con la novela corta que adjunta al final del volumen.
