About this deal

Predation: The wild pigeon is predated upon, almost exclusively, by the peregrine falcon, a bird that is also found living and breeding in coastal regions. The sparrowhawk may also predate on the wild pigeon. The feral pigeon has few if any natural predators, with man being the main threat to the bird in areas of human habitation. I often use car analogies to explain the position of different types of shotgun in the market to those new to shooting. For me, the Silver Pigeon and Browning’s 525 are the Ford Mondeo of the shooting world. They are unpretentious, have great handling, are well made, affordable and do the job. They also come in different levels of finish, so the Silver Pigeon V would be the equivalent of a Titanium version of the Mondeo.

Since early history, the pigeon has lived alongside man and been exploited by man for food, sport and as a messenger, courtesy of the birds’ unique ability to return to its nest and its mate from huge distances. The feral pigeon is now one of the most successful and resourceful species on the planet and is found in virtually every part of the globe with the exception of the Sahara Desert and the two Polar ice caps. The bird has adapted to survive in extreme weather conditions and in temperatures ranging from -50° to +50°, yet it has still managed to proliferate. The pigeon is one of the most intelligent species on the planet and able to undertake tasks that were previously thought to be the sole preserve of humans and primates. The pigeon can pass the ‘mirror test’ (being able to recognise its own reflection in a mirror) and can even recognise all 26 letters of the alphabet, and man has exploited this intelligence and these abilities for thousands of years. The pigeon has served man faithfully and often heroically throughout. However, in the 21st century the pigeon has at last outlived its usefulness and is slaughtered by the millions for commercial gain, often illegally, without a thought to the debt of gratitude that is owed to the bird. Danny De Voogd (NL); wins 1st prize against 1,500 p. and 2nd prize against 1,700 p. with a descendant of Gold Dust. As a Sporter, it has been designed specifically for Sporting clays. A game version is also available. The Sporter has a ventilated midrib, is slightly heavier than the game version and is finished with a rubber recoil pad, whereas the game version has a rather classy wooden heel-plate.

They can detect storms, volcanos and earthquakes much before. As I mentioned earlier, the internals are the same across the whole Silver Pigeon range and are an inertia-operated trigger-plate action powered by captive coil springs. They are tried and tested, so no issues there. Derivation: The word ‘pigeon’ is derived from the Latin word ‘pipio’, meaning ‘young cheeping bird’. The word ‘dove’ is of Norse origin and first appeared in the 14th century as ‘dova’ or ‘douve’.

The balance was around the hinge pin, giving the gun a wonderful neutral handling and made the gun feel relatively light when mounted. It is believed that pigeons have been bred in China since 772 BC, and according to author Salvador Bofarull, Indian and Arab merchants used carrier pigeons when visiting China. Several hundred years later, references have been found that confirm pigeons were used to carry messages attached to their legs. At the first Olympic Games held in 776 BC, every athlete taking part brought a homing pigeon from his village. If he won his event, his would be the bird that carried the news home. Have a look at your piece of jewellery. If it was made in a country that adheres to the Convention on the Control and Marking of Articles of Precious Metals (otherwise known as the Common Control Mark), you should find a set of hallmarks / stamps. These markings will be pretty small, so you'll need a magnifying glass to see them properly! These birds are great with multitasking. They can switch jobs, and still do the tasks at the same speed.

Editor’s verdict

Even though man no longer has a need for the pigeon in the 21st century, there is clearly still a place for this much-loved and much-maligned bird. Slowly we are realising that we cannot wipe out wild bird populations just because they are inconvenient or unwelcome - particularly when the source of the problem is human. With the advent of the Internet and the wider availability of information, we are learning how and why problems such as those associated with the feral pigeon exist and how we can better deal with them. We also know that pigeon populations can be controlled in a humane and effective manner and that to continue to use commercially motivated controls such as culling is not only morally wrong (and often illegal) but also counterproductive. The future may not be full of hope for the pigeon, but the bird has survived in close association with man for over 10,000 years and it is likely that it will continue to do so well into the future. Originally developed from Serbia, these beautiful birds are popular for their endurance in flying and performance. Their skill and abilities are competitive and are muscular with short and stout body and long wings. These birds cannot be found outside the native region.

They are intelligent. And they can recognise similar faced people in pictures and daily life, and all the more, can even recognize themselves. Interesting isn’t it! Wild pigeons survive for greater age than domestic ones. Few breeds can even survive for around 30 years! I dusted a pair no problem. The Silver Pigeon V was pulverising them. I can only assume there were quite tight chokes fitted, but I didn’t have a choke key to confirm this. You can never find baby pigeons outside. They live in their nest for a month, after which they look similar to adults.

In young pigeons, systematic use of GPSOL helps in the optimal development of the young organism, bones, feather which is a guarantee for the future and the performance of young pigeons Last but not least, do you know pigeons saved more than thousands of human lives during world wartime? They delivered critical updates and messages, which helped several missions and army. We all often encounter these beautiful birds in day to day life. Now that we learnt different and popular varieties of pigeons across the globe let us unwind some interesting, and unknown facts about them. The future for the turtle dove does not look positive with breeding habitats on the decline and large increases in illegal shooting and netting in Mediterranean areas. The large decline in numbers suggests that unless the bird is better protected it may become a rare and infrequent visitor to the UK and may eventually die out altogether. Other theories include the use of roads and even low frequency seismic waves to find their way homeDuring the increased effort of feeding young pigeons, it also supply feeding pigeons and their young pigeons with the necessary minerals and electrolytes, helping to maintain the optimal condition of the birds. GPSOL (complementary feed) is a liquid electrolyte with a special mineral composition for pigeons. The unique combination of electrolytes and minerals based on energy carrier (glucose) helps to accelerate the process of regeneration of the pigeon body after racing as well as helps to provide birds with the necessary minerals and electrolytes before long and exhausting race in hot weather, supplements the content of fluid in the body, improves the condition and reduces thirst.
