About this deal

Give your strawberries plenty of space. Dig a hole with a trowel big enough to take the roots of the plant. Plant them 45cm (18in) apart, leaving 75cm (30in) between rows - the crown should be level with the soil surface. This is what an out of control strawberry bed looks like. Learn from our mistakes and don’t let this get out of hand! Strawberries are quite easy to grow but to keep your bed going year after year, some maintenance needs to be done. And we’ve figured out how to grow huge strawberries every year! When you want to have new plants for putting in the ground, always take rooted runners off your youngest mother plants. As the fruits develop, place dry straw or mulching fabric underneath to stop splashes blemishing the fruit.

You can also use diatomaceous earth; sprinkle this around the base of your plants. Finely crushed egg shells will work too, as these pests won’t want to cross the sharp edges of the shells. After the plants have settled in, you will find them starting to grow runners. You will be able to tell a runner because the mother plant sends out a long stem and starts new roots and leaves. Plant in a sunny and sheltered position in fertile, free-draining soil. Poor soil can be improved by adding compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Just be sure the shells are well washed though or that may attract even more pests. Our other Growing Berries posts By the end of the growing season, all the plants will be the same size. It’s easier for us to keep them in different beds.Soon the plant will start bearing flowers – each of the flower buds will turn into a strawberry. You will probably find a LOT of flowers on EACH plant.

Plant strawberries in mid-spring or in late summer/early autumn – no later than the first week of September innorthern Britain and the second week of September in southern regions. Planting in August or early September gives them longer to get established before fruiting, so they should produce a better crop. You will be able to have a really good berry harvest if you just keep cutting and planting the baby runners from the newest plants. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is a wonder of art. By that I don’t just mean it is one of the world’s greatest paintings. It is also something we wonder at, astonished, like a rare relic in a cabinet of bizarre curiosities. What is happening in this outrageous display of unfettered imagination and what can it possibly mean? The cold weather conditions described by Dr. Nir Dai led to a bumper crop of strawberries for Ariel’s fruit farm, producing not just one, but four sizable strawbs. If you plant strawberries too deep, they might rot, but if you leave the crown protruding from the soil, the plant will dry out and die. Firm your plants in well and water thoroughly. However, instead of bearing one big harvest over the next month, these berries will keep growing and bearing fruit all summer long, sometimes even into the Fall months! That way, all the energy will be sent to the fruit on that plant. (What to do with these runners? Keep reading) Strawberries should be planted out as soon as possible - only plant outdoors once all risk of frost has gone.
