She works along to relate the features of her mother’s personality to her social and cultural background rather than just presenting them as mere characteristics. Choosing a factory job guaranteed some stable income, but was not seen favorably by townspeople who were still skeptical of women working outside the domestic sphere. Yet the book suffers from its cold and 'objective approach', which frequently disperses the gathering warmth. These silenced memories give us insight into many other Herstories and truths that may never be known not only because they were once forbidden, but because they are still mostly inaccessible to a mass U. Underneath a style that might seem detached, even cold, there lies a need to mitigate Ernaux’s loneliness without sounding false or self-indulgent, and the carefully described scenes of moments spent with her mother shine for their simplicity and honesty, creating an intimate ambiance that allows the reader to be part of the story of Ernaux’s mother.
