Description

Mateer’s poetry touches on feminism, mental health, assault, and the unfairness of having our stories rewritten for us.

For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms - but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation. Never has a poetry collection made me feel things so deep in my soul that it feels like I’ve dived deeper than the ocean floor. Blurb: Bestselling and award-winning author Trista Mateer takes an imaginative approach to self-care in this new poetry and prose collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It . It is an authentic dialogue between the poet and Goddess Aphrodite on various themes like love and hate. It’s partly narrated from Aphrodite’s POV and partly from poet and sometimes conversation between both.

Men said she was the perfect vessel for evil to enter the world, but men are the ones who wrote the stories. In Troy they fought over Helen like children but Achilles mourned Patroclus the way a soul mourns a body.

I do not even know what compelled me to give this collection a chance, but I am thrilled that I did. Trista Mateer is the award-winning and bestselling author of multiple poetry collections, including the feminist greek mythology retelling, Aphrodite Made Me Do It. I like that it personifies how we can all be something beautiful on our own, yet still connect to create something much larger and more beautiful as a whole. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

I usually really enjoy longer poems, but here, the supposed longer poems aren't giving me what they are suppose to : they usually consist of a succession of short sentences that seem more like a bullet-pointed draft than an actual poem. It actually feels more like an account of things Aphrodite taught the narrator in anecdotal style, which was a strange approach. aphrodite then (as the feminist, lgbt icon she is) explains the power of love and forgiveness to our narrator. No tenía idea de que iba el libro pero es hermoso, lo recomiendo mucho y se ha convertido en uno de mis libros favoritos.

After a poem introducing the author’s voice and relationship to love, she goes on to explain a dream she had in which Aphrodite visited her and asked, “What do you need? I loved the illustrations and pictures included in this book which I really think helped to highlight the lovely prose. Known for her eponymous blog, she is now the author of multiple poetry collections, including When The Stars Wrote Back (2020), Aphrodite Made Me Do It (2019), Honeybee (2018), and The Dogs I Have Kissed (2015) which won a Goodreads Choice Award the year of its release.
