A vitamin D deficiency can only be discovered through blood tests that measure levels of storage vitamin D, known as 25(OH)D. This is why the NHS recommends that between October and March, everyone above the age of one takes a daily supplement containing 10mcg (micrograms) of vitamin D (confusingly, sometimes also written as 10μg, or 400IU – International Units). This may lead to elevated levels of “free” vitamin D in your body, which may travel inside cells and overwhelm the signaling processes affected by vitamin D. Although vitamin D toxicity is rare, recent increases in supplement use are thought to have led to an increase in reported cases ( 5).
Vitamin D toxicity is treatable, but severe cases may eventually cause kidney failure, irregular heartbeat, and calcification of soft tissues such as arteries ( 5).If you’re choosing a vitamin D supplement, be sure to find one that contains D3 (cholecalciferol), as it may be more effective at raising your blood levels of vitamin D ( 7). summary

Thus, people who have medical conditions that reduce fat absorption are prone to vitamin D deficiencies. These include inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), liver disease, and people who have had bariatric surgery ( 14, 45). If you have access to strong sun all year, occasional sun exposure may fulfil your vitamin D requirements. For best results take vitamin D once a day, with a meal, because it is a fat-soluble vitamin. If you take it on an empty stomach it is unlikely to be absorbed.
